BEGINNER’S GUIDE
Getting Started with Dog-Powered Gear
Whether you have one dog who loves to run or a full team in training, the right equipment helps keep every outing safer, more comfortable, and more fun.
WHERE TO BEGIN
Start with the right harness, then build from there.
Any dog that runs and pulls needs a properly fitted harness. From there, the right lines, collars, and accessories depend on your activity, team size, and setup.
STEP 1
Choose the Right Harness
X-Back Harness
The X-Back Harness is the classic choice for dog sledding and pulling activities where your dog runs out in front of you.
Best for dog sledding, carting, scootering, bikejoring, skijoring, and similar pulling activities.

The Urban Trail Harness covers about half of the dog’s body and securely cradles the torso while staying comfortable for active use.
Best for urban mushing, bikejoring, canicross, rollerblading, skateboarding, walking, and hiking.

An X-Back Harness is designed for pulling and may not fully conform to your dog’s body unless the dog is leaning into it. Dogs may be able to back out of this style, so a belly band may be recommended in certain situations.
STEP 2
Pick the Right Line Setup
Scooter Lines
Great for urban mushing with one dog, scooter lines include what you need to attach your dog to a scooter or bike. Single lines work well for one dog, while double scooter lines can run one or two dogs.
Ganglines
Ganglines are used for teams of three or more dogs. Alpine’s modular setup lets you add or remove two-dog sections as your team size changes.
Tug Lines & Necklines
Tug lines connect the dog’s harness to the team line. Necklines help keep dogs positioned side-by-side and can be ordered as replacements.
OTHER LINES TO CONSIDER
Shocklines, Snublines & Snow Hook Lines
A shockline adds bungee-style shock absorption between the team and your sled, cart, scooter, or bike. A snubline with a quick-release mechanism helps secure your setup before takeoff. Snow hook lines help keep the snow hook connected to the sled when stopping on the trail.
STEP 3
Choose a Safe, Secure Collar
Limited Slip Collar
Designed to slip on and off easily while tightening enough to help prevent backing out, without fully choking the dog.
Full Circle Collar
A durable collar option that conforms around the dog’s neck and is available in color and reflective options.
Safety Reminder
Choke and prong collars should not be used when dogs are necklined together. Choose a comfortable, secure collar that will not break or slip over the dog’s head during activity.
